LPO Aude, a biodiversity preservation association, has been present for over 20 years in the region. For the past 15 years, it has implemented actions to accumulate knowledge, ensure the security and improvement of carrion-eating bird habitats; these actions have resulted in the installation of a new griffon vulture colony in the region and in France in 2010, as well as the first successful nesting operation of Bearded Vultures in 2012.

LPO Aude is also the local operator in charge of 8 National Action Plans of such endangered species as the Egyptian vulture and Bonelli’s eagle.

The association provides its ornithological expertise to support and lead the Natura 2000 network: 35% of the local territory are classified Special Protection Area (SPA). This is why LPO Aude, within the framework of LIFE GYCONNECT, has been selected to work in the Pyrenees on the implementation of the project’s local action plan.

The actions under its responsibility are conducted by a team of 7 permanent employees, supported by a network of volunteers among the 400 members of the association.
